Don’t Give Up On Your Dream Before It Happens

It was December 1999 and for over 10 years my vision was to live about 30 minutes from a metropolitan area, to be more in the country. And for at least 5 years I had dreamed of getting a Bernese Mountain dog.

In my 2000 visioning process, I almost left both out of my vision.

At that time there were NO signs of progress toward either of those dreams. But, I had this deep knowing in my heart and when I would talk about it tears would well up in my eyes … my sign that Spirit was speaking to me. So I included them in my vision for 2000 anyway.

By mid-year, everything shifted. A dear friend moved out of the area and I was able to rent her charming log cabin, nestled in the redwoods about 30 minutes from central Marin. Moving to a home in the country opened the way for me to get my beloved Bernese Mountain dog.

In November of 2000, I visited a breeder who had a litter of pups, but unfortunately, they were all spoken for. Then, the week before Christmas I got a call from the breeder saying someone had backed out and if I wanted a puppy he was mine. December 23, 2000, my mom and I brought my first sweet Berner puppy, Ollie, home.

The year 2000 made me more of a believer than ever in the importance of having and holding an inspiring vision … even when there is no tangible sign of being any closer to it happening. Ollie filled a huge place in my heart and I felt such gratitude for being able to live in such a beautiful place.

More than one person questioned the wisdom of living this far out and having a very large dog. But following a deep inner knowing is like following a star. When a deep part of myself is calling me to do something that doesn’t seem exactly rational, I’m learning to “follow my star”. I start taking the steps I CAN take, let go of how and when … and trust that if it’s right it’ll happen.

If you’re beginning to lose hope on a dream, please don’t. Hold on to your vision of what you desire. Who knows, this might be the year it all comes to together!

Oh, and Ollie was followed by my Berners Rhylie and Gracie. Each one came to me in amazing ways. Stay tuned for those stories!
